‘Concerts as Concepts’

is a section of my IB HL Visual Arts Exhibition (2025), displaying a concert through the audience, and the stage itself, rather than the performer on stage.

“Music is my greatest inspiration, and I want to represent the versatility of music in my work. I love concerts, and how the different designs of stage and lighting can drastically impact an artists' performance, depending on whether the focus is the view of the backdrop screen or the artist themselves. I have been greatly inspired by observing crowds and fan cultures at concerts, both large and small, and how the fans enhance each other's experiences while bonding over performances. I wish to further improve these audiences' experiences by designing intriguing and interactive venues in the future. I took these fan-culture and concert ideas and broadened them to encompass a theme for my works in IB. This model shows a paint palette-shaped section of a concert hall that I designed, a formation my musical inspirations in a more practical presentation, which I hoped to experiment with to help me understand which aspects of concert halls should be enhanced for entertainment. I chose to keep the writing of the recycled cardboard as I liked how the variation of colours used distinguished the different areas from each other, such as the purple seating zones versus the red barricades. Its purposeful placement and effectiveness in portraying a decorated atmosphere shows that its meant for enjoyment and celebration.”

AUDIENCE

“AUDIENCE” focuses on the listeners of the music, simple colours and similar happy expressions on diverse faces representing individual people bonded together by their love of the same music. I was inspired by a concert by AgustD that I saw in the nosebleeds a few years ago, where all the lights turned on and I could see every person in the hall cheering at once. I made hazy beams to create the mood of a memory, where faces may not be remembered, but the energy is.
